Biocompatibility Defined

Biocompatibility is a fundamental characteristic that makes a substance very well tolerated so as not to interfere with normal bodily functions on all levels.  

FALSE CONCEPTS TO BE EXPOSED

A dental material or any other substance :

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible simply because one or many of it's components are individually biologically " acceptable " or even biocompatible. 

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible simply because one or many of it's components are deemed less reactive or less toxic than what is found in another product.

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible because there is no evident local reaction when used.

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible because it is a good marketing angle for the product.

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible because it " passed " a test.

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible simply because it is " gentle " on oral tissues.

  • Is NOT deemed biocompatible because it is tooth coloured
